Cactus bloom

Another dreary day. Let's brighten it up with a cactus bloom. I think the Christmas cactus bloom is just as pretty as an orchid .

Calendula

Wow! This will brighten up our grey weather. I keep a couple pots of this flower, also an herb. The color is great and the flower petals are edible. It does better out of the hot sun and is still blooming now.

Autumn Crocus

What a color for the fall! These blooms would fit right in with a spring palette.

Spider Lilies

Seen in the yards of older homes, this fall bloomer first sends up a slender stalk, followed by an airy bloom, and later, the greenery. A shovel full of bulbs from a neighbor long ago has given me plenty. Common names are Pink Ladies and the fun Naked Ladies, as the flower resembles a fancy ladies hat atop a bare stem. Ooh la la!

Wild Daisies

At the edge of a wood, the wild daisies are late summer bloomers. The patch is pretty thick this year due to all the rain.

The Bloom

Just after midnight we ventured out across the yard to check the bloom. What a beauty! Earlier in the day the flower bud had puffed up like a little balloon. And yes, the scent was sweet and soft and evident 10 feet away!

Night Blooming Cereus

Looking like it is right out of "The Little Shop of Horrors," here is the flower of my cereus cactus. The bud comes off the side of a leaf structure. The flower will open at night and gives a perfumy air. A gift of a rooted cutting came with the advice that I would wait 7 years before seeing a bloom. That was true and since the first bloom it's been a challenge to catch one before it's been and gone. It's such a neat plant and I've heard stories that some plan little parties around the blooming. It did not bloom last night, so we'll be checking again tonight.

Marigold

Sometime last year after I selected something special from Miss Lizzie's boutique, I found a pack of marigold seed attached to my receipt as a thank-you. One of those seeds produced this pretty bunch ... merci beaucoup!

A Darling Dahlia

I love dahlias and have tried and lost many. This is a new try. My favorites are the bigger than a moon pie 'dinner plate' dahlias, especially in yellow ... also the color of my favorite moon pie!

A Sunny Spot

It's a grey morning round here. How about some sunny flowers to brighten the day?

Pretty in Pink

What a beauty! And the bonus is the perfumed air.

Greetings from Waterlily

The narrow causeway that takes you onto the island is always full of life, and the colors are always changing. In the summer it fills with waterlilies, giving evidence to the name of this community.

Hippeastrum

I call it amaryllis, hippeastrum just doesn't roll off the tongue for me. I love the flower when it's at this point, looking like a costume from Cirque du Soleil.
